Fire TV & Android TV

The recommended way to run a screen: a ~£30 Fire TV Stick or any Android TV box, running the WeMasjid Screens app.

What you need

  • An Amazon Fire TV Stick (any recent model) or an Android TV / Google TV box
  • A screen created in Admin → Screens, with its 6-character code
  • About five minutes

Install the app

  1. Get the APK link from your dashboard: Admin → Screens → Players & downloads. There's a QR code, a download button and a copyable link.
  2. Fire TV Stick: Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → turn on Apps from unknown sources. Install the free Downloader app from the Amazon store, open it and type the APK link.
  3. Android TV / Google TV: install Downloader (or Send files to TV) from Google Play and do the same — or sideload over ADB with adb install wemasjid-screens.apk.
  4. Open WeMasjid Screens. It shows the pairing page — type the screen's 6-character code.

The app remembers the pairing permanently, including through power cuts, and retries automatically if the internet drops.

Autostart caveat

Android doesn't let apps reliably auto-launch on every TV. On Fire TV, enable Settings → Applications → Launch on startup where available; otherwise open the app once after power-on. The app does keep the screen awake and runs full-screen once launched.

Updates

New APKs are published to the same Players page whenever the app changes. They're signed with the same key, so installing the new APK over the old one is a normal update — the pairing is kept. (A signed release can't install over a debug build; uninstall first in that case.)

Move or unpair the app

To pair the device to a different screen, long-press Menu on the remote — or press Back five times — to return to the pairing page. Removing the screen in the dashboard stops the device showing anything new at the next refresh.

Tips

  • Portrait displays: rotate using the TV's own display/rotation setting.
  • The display caches the last good data, so the board keeps showing times through short outages.
  • Wired Ethernet via a USB adaptor is more reliable than Wi-Fi where the stick supports it.
Every connected player shows its app version on the Players & downloads page, so you can see which TVs need an update.
