Gift Aid & GASDS
Two HMRC schemes that add real money to donations — WeMasjid records everything; the masjid submits the claim.
The two schemes, in plain English
- Gift Aid — if a UK taxpayer gives £10 and declares it, HMRC adds £2.50. The donor must give their name, home address and confirm they pay enough UK tax.
- GASDS (Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme) — small contactless/cash gifts of £30 or less can be claimed without a declaration, up to a yearly cap. Think of it as Gift Aid for the collection plate.
Who can claim
Your masjid must be a registered or excepted charity (excepted covers most places of worship that haven't needed to register). Set your charity status and number under Settings → Charity; Gift Aid options only appear once that's confirmed.
What WeMasjid records
- Online donors can tick the declaration at checkout — name and address captured there and then, reusable for future gifts
- Recurring gifts carry the declaration for every payment
- Small eligible donations (terminal tap-to-give and manual entries of £30 or under) are flagged GASDS automatically
Making a claim
The Gift Aid page shows everything ready to claim — Gift Aid donations and GASDS amounts separately. Prepare a claim for a period, and download the HMRC schedule CSV from the claim's page — the row-per-donation schedule HMRC's online service asks for.
WeMasjid is a record-keeping service — the masjid submits the claim itself through HMRC Charities Online. Declarations must be kept for 6 years.
If your masjid isn't a charity (like our pilot), the whole Gift Aid section stays hidden — nothing confusing for the committee, and it flips on with one setting if status changes.
